Warcraft 3 and natural selection

Many people know Warcraft 3 as a strategy game
where skill, micro and knowledge is important. Warcraft 3 is known for
its famous players such as 4K.Grubby. However time moves on and the
game changes, new maps are developed. Nowadays every active ladder
player knows world's most popular custom map – Defense of the
Ancients. It is known as Dota. But why did the game change so much?
Blizzard ain't god and made the changes, neither did it happen by
chance. It is in game evolution.

Before I come to my main argument I have to give you an idea of wc3's
complexity. The before mentioned Dota is not only popular because of
new heroes and the community behind it, but also because of its
completely new game play. A player is directly able to complete with
others and to show his skills. If he knows what to do and how to do it
he is able to succeed and will win. Statistics can be collected in a
third party tool and also be used for a league. Yes.. You heard right,
there is already a league for Dota. Electronic sport teams such as
Schroet Kommando (sK) see defense of the ancients as a new discipline.
Games can be seen on television. Of course, for us normal beings it is
very hard to ever reach such skill and to play in world's top
tournaments where the winner obtains thousands of Dollars per
successful win, but we can all participate and watch those tournaments
online, or even on television. It is almost like watching soccer or
football.

But what is the driving force for developers such as Icefrog to make
complex Warcraft 3 custom maps? Why are there always new maps such as
Wintermaul wars, sheep tag, tree tag or footman? It is quite easy.
Blizzard made it possible by inventing an unique, new programming
language just for customizing Warcraft 3 maps. Everybody is able to
modify maps and make his own, customized versions using the World
Editor. What Blizzard did not know, they provided the basics to make
in game evolution possible.

Yes, custom maps Darwin's natural selection have a lot in common. With
one exception, there is no sexual intercourse. After modifying a map
the players are able to upload/send it to their friend. The easy way
is just hosting a Warcraft 3 game and allowing other players to
download the map. If the map is good other players will host the map
themselves, if it fails, then it will not become popular and will
dissappear out of the Battle.net. Good maps are able to evolve and bad
ones do not make it beyond the developers hard drive. To put it into a
nutshell, good ones establish and bad ones disappear. That's like in
nature, good genes build good survival machines and bad ones die out.

My conclusion is the following: If somebody provides the basics such
as in wc3 the World editor, then it seems almost inescapable to
prevent selection. So, by playing Warcraft 3 and its custom maps, all
of us take part in the complex process of evolution.

DotA 6.53

Finally the new version of the popular and frequently hosted fun map DotA is released. The version is Dota 6.53 and it contains some major changes and bug fixes. Still the most obvious changes are the additions which were being made. There is now for example a new sentinel hero available that is called “Goblin Clockwerk” additionally the hero Lycanthrope has been reworked, just like the random hero picking system. Furthermore the DotA-Team introduced a new script which enables cross-language support.

Defense of the ancients is probably the most played and popular Warcraft 3 custom map and better known a DotA. With the new version of DotA the team around icefrog and himself just again did a magnificent job. The custom map is constantly getting more balanced and DotA is on its way to make it to the most likable wc3 custom map.

Diablo 3 news

Blizzard announced Diablo 3 around 2 weeks ago. Every player of Blizzard games is interested in seeing new pictures and videos to get an idea of how the game play will be. Will the game be another success just like World of Warcraft, Warcraft 3 or Diablo 2. Blizzard has to keep several things in mind to combine the success stories of both 3 games. What has to be done to make Diablo III good as well?

Warcraft 3 is unique with its custom games and balanced game play. Gamers consider it to be one of the most balanced games ever made. No race is superior, all races have a chance to win. Playing the game is free of charge, you only need a valid cd key.

Diablo 2 is unique with it's rp system. Players can collect items and improve their heroes. They can also sell them wherever they want. That is fun and ensures a long staying game experience. Players are even able to trade their items outside of the game.

World of Warcraft is an RPG game with an addicting game play. Players play their characters to be superior and to win in pvp vs other players. If they succeed they will get rewards. That makes them stick to World of Warcraft.

Diablo 3 has to be, without monthly fees and with an as good gameplay as the prior games. Then it might succeed.

Dota 6.52e

Finally Icefog released the new Dota 6.52e today. There has been reported a bug with syllabear allowing players to cheat. It occured with the new 1.22 Warcraft 3 patch. As usual Icefrog patched it asap and provided the latest defense of the ancients version to us. This is the last stable map and is also used for tournaments.

Diablo 3 information

Diablo 3 is Blizzard's new capitalistic Battleship. I am myself a fan of the Diablo series and of all other Blizzard games. But they definitely went into the wrong direction with their monthly payments and Game masters. I would greaty appreciate a return to old habits like in Diablo 2. Players were able to play - they were able to choose whether they want to be evil or good. I miss the times when I stole the first items in act 1 with my sorceress: "I dupe item - you drop - 100 % free". The guy dropped, teleport and it was mine. Pretty evil.

Finally Icefog released Dota 6.52d. This version was mainly released to fix some bugs and do adjust strength of the heroes. If you however ask me and I must say, there are still some heroes that are overpowered. Best example is Ursa.

Dota 6.52c is a very popular custom map for Warcraft 3. The game play is unique with at maximum 5 players battling each other. People consider Dota to be the most advanced custom map for wc3 ever made. Almost 50 percent of the custom games are nowadays Dota. There is even a Dota league for dedicated players that like playing and are interested in prices. Defense of the Ancients is also part of several Game shows on television like German Giga.

This map is very easy to install. You simply have to download it and extract it into your Warcraft 3 custom maps folder. When starting your Warcraft 3 you will be able to host games/join other games without having to download the map. However, I recommend you to train single player or in games with other newbs because most of the players dislike new players because they can lead to a faster ending of the game by giving advantages to the other team.

Wrath of the Lich King Private Server

WotLK is going to be the new World of Warcraft expansion. Several prototypes have already been made and are playable on WoW private servers. However those version still contain quite a lot bugs. Nonetheless, if you would like to have a look on the Death Knight I recommend you to have a closer look at WotLK Private server. I am still looking for a decent guide that shows you how you can set up your own server for Wrath of the Lich King. Let me know if you know one.
